Young Travelers

Flying is an exciting adventure for your child, and we’re here to make it as smooth as possible. Avelo flies from smaller, more convenient airports. That means less stress for you and your child as you navigate the check-in, boarding and flying experience.

Here’s what you should know about traveling with children:

Safety First

Safety is the heart of everyone and everything at Avelo. We have some standards because we care about every Avelo Customer, especially your precious young traveler

Are there checked bag fees for strollers or car seats?

There is no fee for a stroller, car seat, booster seat, or a breast pump.

Is pre-boarding available for families with kids?

Pre-boarding is available for families with Young Travelers under the age of 2.

Can my child sit on my lap during the flight?

We recommend every infant purchase a ticket and be properly secured in a Child Restraint System for safety. You may also choose the Infant in Lap option during booking, and your child may sit on your lap if they are under the age of two.

What is a Child Restraint System (CRS)?

A CRS is a hard-backed child safety seat that is government-approved for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

Does my child need a CRS during the flight?

FAA recommends that all children weighing under 20 pounds be placed in a rear-facing CRS. All children weighing between 20 to 40 pounds should be placed in a forward-facing child restraint. Children over 40 pounds should use the aircraft seatbelt. If you opt for an Infant in Lap, your child must remain on your lap.

Does my child need to be in a CRS for the duration of the flight?

If you purchase an Infant in Seat ticket, your child must be in a CRS for taxi, takeoff, landing, and in-flight when the “fasten seatbelt” sign is illuminated. If you opt for an Infant in Lap, your child must remain on your lap.

What are the basic CRS requirements?

Every CRS must have:

  • a solid backseat
  • placards to determine orientation of device in seat
  • a width of no more than 16.5-17 inches, which is the space between the seat armrests on Avelo aircraft
  • restraints installed to secure the unit to the aircraft and internal restraint straps installed to secure the child to the unit
  • appropriate labels indicating the seat is approved for use on an aircraft (a flight attendant should ask you
    this before takeoff to confirm)

What labels do I need to have on my CRS?

Seats manufactured between 1981 and 1985 must have a label that states: “This child restraint seat conforms to all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Seats manufactured after February 1985 must have two labels: “This CRS conforms to all applicable Federal motor vehicle standards,” and “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft” in red lettering.

Seats not manufactured to approved U.S. standards must have a label showing approval of a foreign government or that seats were manufactured under standards of the United Nations. This label consists of letter “E” surrounded by a circle followed by a number of the approving country.

Where can I place a CRS?

A CRS cannot block access and passageways to emergency exits and it cannot block other customers. For example, you cannot have a CRS in the aisle or middle position if the customer in the window seat is not traveling with the child in the CRS. Additionally, a CRS can only be attached to one seat with a seatbelt during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

Can I use a seatbelt extension for my CRS?

A seatbelt extension may be used if needed to properly secure the unit to the seat.

What if I'm traveling with more than one CRS?

Multiples CRS should not be placed across the aisle from each other in the same row, since they could cause an adult to block the aisle when removing children during an evacuation. However, they can be placed next to each other in the samerow. For example, one CRS in the middle seat and one in the aisle seat of the same row is permissible as long as the customer in the window seat is traveling with the children in the CRS.

Are booster seats allowed?

No. Booster seats are not permitted at any time.

What documentation is required for my child?

Please bring a government-issued ID, such as a birth certificate or passport, as proof of age for your lap child. Electronic versions, photos, or immunization records are not accepted. Additionally, for international flights, it is important to note that there may be specific regulations and documentation criteria for minor children under the age of 18 traveling without one or both parents, which can differ from country to country. It is the Customer’s responsibility to ensure compliance with all required documentation and procedures. Customers can visit websites such as https://www.iatatravelcentre.com/ for guidance on travel requirements.

What if my child turns 2 years old during our trip?

Once your child turns 2 years old, they must travel in their own seat. Please bring a CRS for any flights on/after their second birthday.

What is the age limit for a minor to travel?

Avelo’s minimum age to fly alone is 15. All children 14 years old or younger must travel with a parent, guardian, or another traveler 15 years or older. Avelo does not accept reservations for unaccompanied minor children who are 14 years of age or younger. What should I do if I'm booking a flight for a minor 15 years or older?

If booking a flight for a minor traveler, be sure they can:

  • confidently navigate the airports
  • understand all security, check-in, boarding and in-flight processes
  • follow all Crewmember instructions
  • adapt to and manage possible flight disruptions
