Avelo Airlines Announces New Base in Fort Myers

Avelo’s fourth base will create more than 35 jobs

Avelo to initially serve five nonstop destinations

FORT MYERS, Fla.; September 8, 2022 — Avelo Airlines announced today it is accelerating the airline’s U.S. expansion with the opening of a fourth base this fall in Fort Myers, Florida.  

The new base will be located at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). Avelo currently operates bases at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), and Orlando International Airport (MCO). 

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said, “The opening of Avelo’s fourth base in Fort Myers this fall will enable us to serve more destinations, add more flights, operate more airplanes, fly more Customers and employ more Crewmembers. Based on the success of our initial route between Southern Connecticut and Fort Myers, we have announced four additional destinations that will take flight from RSW this fall – creating a meaningful source of new visitors to Southwest Florida. This is just the beginning.”

Over time, Avelo anticipates flying hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to Fort Myers from cities currently without nonstop service to Southwest Florida. To support its expanding Fort Myers presence, Avelo expects to create more than 35 RSW-based jobs. These positions will be a combination of Avelo Crewmembers and jobs with Avelo business partners operating at RSW. Roles will include Airport Customer Service, Aircraft Technical Operations and Maintenance, Pilots, Flight Attendants and Supervisors. A Rapidly Expanding RSW Fleet and Route Network  

Beginning in November, Avelo will base one 189-seat Boeing Next-Generation (NG) 737-800 jetliner at RSW. Avelo’s current systemwide fleet consists of 11 737 NGs. The airline expects to operate 14 aircraft by the end of 2022 and 16 aircraft by the second quarter of 2023.  

Avelo currently operates flights several days per week between RSW and the airline’s Northeast base at HVN – Connecticut’s most convenient airport. Beginning November 10, Avelo will serve four additional destinations from RSW: Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina (RDU); Binghamton, New York, (BGM); and two cities in Michigan: Kalamazoo (AZO) and Lansing (LAN).
