Hollywood Burbank Airport and Avelo Airlines’ “Airport Academy” Soar into Second Year of Inspiring Careers in Aviation

• BUR and Avelo collaboration recognized as “Best Airport-Airline Partnership” in U.S.

LOS ANGELES: Feb. 28, 2024 — Los Angeles’ best airport – Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) – and Avelo Airlines announced today they are kicking off the second year of their award-winning Airport Academy community partnership. The program was conceived to inspire high school students to pursue careers in aviation.

The four-month program is a career exploration and educational experience for Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena high school students. The program introduces students to careers in airport operations, aviation, and aerospace in an interactive and informative learning environment.

During the program, which continues this month, approximately 35 students will:

• Participate in sessions led by Avelo Airlines pilots, flight attendants, aircraft maintenance technicians, airport customer service representatives and airline executives.
• Meet with BUR airport leaders, TSA officers and air traffic control professionals.
• Receive a behind-the-scenes tour of BUR.
• Take an Avelo Airlines roundtrip flight from BUR to the Bay Area’s Sonoma County Airport (STS) aboard one of the airline’s Boeing Next-Generation 737 jetliners – the first time some of these students will take a commercial airline flight.

Students meet at the airport for a total of five hands-on interactive experiences: three hours a day, one day a month through May.

In 2023, Airports Council International North America (ACI-NA) awarded BUR and Avelo with the “Partnering with Carriers” award. It commends BUR’s relationship with Avelo to help ensure the success of “Airport Academy.” The ACI-NA Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications, and Customer Experience Awards are comprised of 20 categories. In 2023, ACI-NA said 80 airports competed, submitting 300 entries.

Since taking flight at BUR in April 2021, Avelo has flown more than 1 million Customers at Hollywood Burbank Airport. Avelo currently operates three 737s at its BUR base which serves 13 nonstop destinations across 7 states.
