Wine Travels Free
How does the Wine Travels Free program work?
It’s as simple as:One (1) case of wine per Customer travels for free on flights departing from/to ALL west coast cities as checked baggage. Note – Customers must be 21 years of age or older to participate.
Ensure your wine is properly packed for travel in a case or cardboard box, with packing material such as styrofoam, bubble wrap, or cardboard liners. See more details below on how to pack your wine for travel.
Simply check your properly packed case of wine with an Avelo Crewmember at the airport ticket counter.
Common Questions
How do I pack my wine for travel?
Wine must be packed and sealed for flying in a protective case or cardboard box.
Let the Avelo Airlines Crewmember know you’re checking a case of wine so that they can add it to your reservation and label your box as “Fragile.”
The TSA and Avelo reserve the right to open your case of checked wine to verify the contents but will reseal it after inspection.
Wine checked in a protective case or cardboard box are covered in case of loss but are checked at your own risk for damage. See our baggage limitations of liability for more details here.
When did the Wine Travels Free program start?
Flights departing from Sonoma County Airport (STS) on or after May 25th, 2024 were eligible for the Wine Travels Free program. The program has been expanded from/to ALL west coast cities as of September 16th, 2024.
Is there a minimum age to participate?
Yes, Customers who would like to check wine must be 21 years of age or older to participate.
What is defined as one case of wine?
Avelo defines one case of wine as a single box or case containing up to 12 bottles, weighing 50 lbs or less. For customers traveling to Salt Lake City, UT (SLC), please note that a person may possess a maximum of nine (9) liters of liquor purchased from outside the state. This is equivalent to maximum of one case of wine or twelve (12) 750 ml bottles.
Can I bring more than one case of wine with me?
If local regulations permit, you’re welcome to bring multiple cases of wine, but only the first case flies for free. Additional checked wine baggage will incur standard checked bag fees. For details, visit our checked bag page here. Since regulations vary by state, please verify the local limits on wine transportation for both your departure and destination cities.
Can I add free checked wine to my booking online?
No, Customers must visit the ticket counter at the airport to add the free checked wine to their booking.
Does Avelo provide or sell packing materials to check wine?
No, Avelo doesn’t offer packing supplies at the airport, but many wineries can assist you with packing your wine. Just ask when purchasing your wine.
I already paid for a checked bag for my wine, can I receive a credit for this?
Yes, please contact our Customer Support Center at (346) 616-9500 to update your booking.
My wine was damaged during the flight. What will Avelo do for this?
